My partner and me find that a great way to keep our LDR interesting is to both try to experience new things. I mean like taking advantage of the more time we have due to being apart and using that time to try new and exciting things which makes us happy for ourselves and importantly happy for each other. There is some really good stuff on this if you go to http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-make-my-long-distance-relationship-work
