Dealing With a Break Up in Your Long Distance Relationship

Long Distance Travel is Too Costly

Posted by LD Diva on July 14th, 2008

Last summer traveling back and fourth wasn’t so costly. In fact in some cases it was downright cheap. Unfortunately summer 2008 is an entirely different story.

So what are you supposed to do when your heart longs to be with your loved one, but your wallet longs to save money?

Save money when you can- This is very basic but sometimes we forget. Do you really need that cup of $8 coffee? Do you really need a weekly manicure? Can you cut it down to twice a month? Save money when you can and put it away in a special “long distance fund”. Whether that fund is in your savings account, or a fire proof safe under your bed it doesn’t matter. (I do recommend an ING online savings account as I’ve had one since 2005 and the interest rates can’t be beat) The key is you actually have to take the money you would have spent on something else and put it somewhere else.

Go halfway- Relationships are all about both people putting in effort. Think about if it’s possible to meet half way. Let’s say you are eight hours away. Can you both drive four hours and meet in the middle? If that’s not possible can you both put in 1/2 the cost of an airline ticket?

Think Mid-Week - Yes it’s fun to travel on the weekend but weekend flights are often more expensive. Look into Tuesday or Wednesday travel and you’ll often find it’s less expensive.

Subscribe to Newsletters- Airlines send out deals all of the time. Make sure you are subscribed to their newsletters so you won’t miss out. If you don’t really like email clutter then create a free email account that you’ll only use for deals.

Sell Something-Personally, it’s easier for me to increase my income than decrease my expenses, so you might find the same works for you. Do you have something you can sell? I’m not necessarily saying jump on eBay and hope to get rich, but your time is a valuable commodity as well. Do you have a special skill or talent you can use to bring in some extra cash? Think about it, and you might find that you have your travel expenses covered in no time.
